BMW turned a tense Hyperpole session at the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours into an exciting pole position story. Dries Vanthoor initially delivered the fastest lap in the #15 BMW. But everything changed after stewards handed Cadillac a penalty for a technical infringement.
The decision scrambled the front row and confirmed BMW at the top of the grid.
Hyperpole 1 Turns Into A Tight Scrap
Hyperpole 1 opened with a close fight across several manufacturers. Earl Bamber set the early pace in the #38 Cadillac with a 3m23.722s lap. Mathieu Jaminet stayed right behind him, keeping pressure on the leaders. Genesis and BMW were never far off, either.
The order kept shifting as the session developed. Sheldon van der Linde briefly pushed the #20 BMW into the lead. The gaps were razor-thin. Less than three-tenths of a second covered multiple cars in the top group.
The pace was fierce from start to finish. Toyota struggled to find its rhythm and dropped down the order. Several Aston Martin and Ferrari entries also missed the cut for Hyperpole 2. The battle at the front, however, stayed incredibly tight.
Hyperpole 2 Belongs To BMW
Hyperpole 2 raised the intensity even higher. Dries Vanthoor delivered a standout lap for BMW. He became the first driver of the week to break into the 3m22 bracket with a 3m22.745s run. He then went even quicker with a 3m22.564s lap. That put BMW in clear control of the session.
According to Motorsport, Robin Frijns backed up BMW's pace with a strong run in second place. Behind them, Will Stevens in the Cadillac and Antonio Félix da Costa in the Alpine stayed close enough to threaten. Every lap mattered. The gaps stayed extremely small from top to bottom.
Cadillac Penalty Shakes The Grid
Cadillac looked strong after the flag. The #38 entry had put in a competitive showing. But stewards later issued a penalty for a technical infringement. That decision removed their advantage.
The final classification changed as a result. BMW was promoted to official pole position for the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours. The margin was tight, but the outcome was decisive once the penalty was applied.
LMP2 And LMGT3 Bring More Action
LMP2 qualifying saw Esteban Masson deliver a commanding performance for Forestier Racing by Panis. He secured pole position by nearly four-tenths over Job van Uitert. Jack Doohan impressed as well, taking third after a solid run.
LMGT3 belonged to Aston Martin. Mattia Drudi put the Heart of Racing entry on pole. His lap was almost a full second quicker than the rest of the field. Ferrari, Lexus, and BMW followed behind but could not match the pace.
