Mitsubishi Shows First Look at Nissan-Built Eclipse Sportback EV

By

The upcoming 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback EV has finally emerged.

The company released the first official images, giving us an early glimpse of its next-generation electric SUV. It's a big step for Mitsubishi as it moves deeper into full electrification.

The new EV crossover is expected to arrive in North America as a 2027 model vehicle. The market launch is planned for the second half of 2026.

Built With Nissan, But Styled the Mitsubishi Way

The Eclipse Sportback EV is not built from scratch alone. It is developed together with Mitsubishi's Alliance partner Nissan. It shares its base platform with the upcoming next-generation Nissan LEAF.

But Mitsubishi is making sure it doesn't feel like a rebadged version. The brand has reshaped the design to fit its own identity. The SUV carries a sharper front and rear look inspired by Mitsubishi's global design language.

It also features signature lighting elements that stand out on the road. Sport-style alloy wheels add a more aggressive stance. The familiar Triple Diamond badge sits front and center, reminding us it's still a Mitsubishi.

This combination of shared engineering and unique styling is key to the project. It allows Mitsubishi to use proven EV tech while still keeping its own personality intact.

Mitsubishi's Long Road Into Electric Vehicles

The Eclipse Sportback EV is new, but Mitsubishi's EV story goes way back. The company started exploring electric mobility as early as the 1970s. That's long before EVs became mainstream.

According to the Electric Cars Report, one of its biggest milestones was the i-MiEV. It is widely considered the world's first mass-produced electric car. It launched globally in 2009 and reached North America in 2011.

Mitsubishi also made waves with the Outlander PHEV, the world's first plug-in hybrid SUV. The model helped bring electrified driving into a more practical, family-friendly format.

Momentum 2030 Pushes the Brand Forward

The Eclipse Sportback EV is part of Mitsubishi's larger Momentum 2030 plan. This strategy is all about speeding up electrification and refreshing its entire lineup.

Mitsubishi plans to launch at least one new or heavily updated model every year until 2030. That means more EVs, more hybrids, and more modern designs across the range.

Alongside the Eclipse Sportback EV, Mitsubishi is also working on a tougher, off-road-focused version of the Outlander. The model is expected to arrive in early 2027.

What We Still Don't Know

Mitsubishi has not shared full technical details yet. Battery size, driving range, and pricing are still under wraps. For now, the focus is clearly on design and direction rather than specs.

Still, expectations are high. With Nissan-backed EV hardware and Mitsubishi's updated styling approach, the Eclipse Sportback EV could become a key model in the brand's next chapter.

When it arrives in 2027, it will leave a big statement about where Mitsubishi wants to go next.
