Electric Vehicle Longevity Study Shows Tesla Among Top Brands For 250,000-Mile Lifespan
By
Electric vehicles continue to change the automotive industry by offering lower emissions, reduced running costs, and strong performance.
However, beyond efficiency and sustainability, new large-scale research suggests that EVs may also compete effectively with gasoline-powered cars in long-term durability and high-mileage capability.
If you currently own a Tesla car, you have a long-lasting EV in the long run.

A recent analysis by iSeeCars evaluated the probability of different brands reaching 250,000 miles. The study examined over 174 million passenger vehicles.
The findings indicate that electric vehicles, particularly Tesla models, are holding up better than many experts previously expected.
The study shows that Tesla vehicles have a 4.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. While this is slightly below the overall industry average of 4.8%, it still places the American automaker in a competitive position among global automakers.
Tesla ranks sixth overall, tied with GMC, and trails only a group of long-established Japanese brands known for durability and engineering consistency.
Despite being a fully electric brand, the company outperforms more than 26 other automotive manufacturers in the study. That said, modern EV engineering is increasingly capable of sustaining long-term usage comparable to internal combustion vehicles.
Top Automakers For 250,000 Miles Reliability Rankings
According to Inside EVs, the study highlights a strong dominance by Japanese automakers in long-term vehicle lifespan metrics. At the top of the list is Toyota with a 17.8% probability of reaching 250,000 miles.
Other leading brands include Lexus (12.8%), Honda (10.8%), and Acura (7.2%).
Luxury Car Mileage Trends and Ownership Behavior
The research also reveals a consistent pattern among luxury car manufacturers. Except for Lexus and Acura, most premium brands tend to fall below the industry average for vehicles reaching 250,000 miles.
However, analysts emphasize that this does not necessarily indicate weaker engineering. Instead, luxury vehicles are often driven under different conditions and typically accumulate fewer total miles due to ownership behavior.
These cars may be replaced more frequently or used less intensively compared to mainstream vehicles. Driving habits and ownership cycles play a major role in affecting mileage statistics, sometimes more than mechanical reliability alone.
Electric Vehicle Durability Beyond Tesla
While Tesla remains the most prominent EV-focused brand in long-term durability discussions, other manufacturers are also expanding their electric lineups.
Companies such as General Motors, Hyundai Motor Company, BMW, Volkswagen, and Cadillac are contributing to the expanding EV ecosystem.
Battery systems improve, and electric drivetrains become more refined. This also means that long-term durability expectations for EVs are steadily increasing.
Real-world data now suggests that electric vehicles can remain reliable well beyond 100,000 miles, with a growing number also reaching much higher thresholds.
