The Mesa Fire Department is adding a new firefighting equipment to improve public safety. The fire department goes full EV, with the addition of a fully electric fire truck.

Mesa Pioneering a Fully Electric Fire Truck

According to Mesa Fire officials, this fire truck operates through a battery that energizes its electric propulsion system. With an approximate four-hour endurance, it empowers firefighters to promptly respond to emergencies, combat fires, and return to base - all powered by electricity.

Remarkably, it facilitates the operation of four hose lines, each pumping at a rate of 750 gallons per minute, utilizing a single charge! The manufacturer draws a comparison, likening its capabilities to having a Tesla supplemented by a diesel generator in the rear compartment.

As reported in Arizona's Family website, the public is encouraged to witness the debut of this groundbreaking electric fire truck at 11 a.m. at Fire Station 221, situated in the vicinity of Ellsworth Road and Ray Road.

The agency praised the city's use of data, research, and technology to test and examine creative solutions. This electric fire engine is a Mesa Fire Department innovation for crew safety.

Moreover, the department asserts that this initiative will contribute to enhancing firefighter safety, bringing modernization to the industry, and propelling the city's efforts in advancing its climate action agenda.

A diesel truck typically costs just over $1 million. According to details shared, it will take months to put the truck to the test to see how it performs during high-level calls, such as mulch or house fires. Furthermore, as the city uses the truck, it will monitor how it performs to see if purchasing more electric fire trucks in the future is reasonable.

The truck has already been deployed, responding to minor incidents like dumpster fires, by firefighters stationed at Fire Station 221 in the Eastmark neighborhood. According to staff, the disparities between the two fire trucks may not be apparent to firefighters but could offer a fresh experience for residents, potentially introducing a new perspective.

Crafted by E-One, this model stands as Arizona's inaugural fully electric 'North American style' fire engine, aligning with Mesa's ambition of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. CarScoops provided more details about Mesa's fully electric fire truck.

While the REV Group, E-One's parent company, provided limited details about the electric fire truck, they highlighted its ability to pump "four hose lines at 750 gallons (2,839 liters) per minute continuously for four hours on a single charge."

Additionally, the company specified that Fire Station 221 will serve as the pumper truck's base, with the building equipped with a charging station capable of replenishing the vehicle in roughly three and a half hours.
