As reported by CarScoops, GM Design has discreetly introduced a fresh "From the Vault" collection, offering insights into previously unrevealed endeavors. The inaugural reveal is the Urban Active Project, envisioning a compact city car akin to the Smart ForTwo and Renault Twizy. This project highlights GM's historical foray into pioneering electric vehicles tailored for urban environments.

Chevy PEV2, PEV3 Concepts are developed to address the demand for inventive urban transportation solutions, these vehicles feature compact dimensions for minimal space occupancy and convenient parking. Initiated approximately three years ago, the project centered on catering to the requirements of customers living in urban hubs like New York, London, and Shanghai.

This initiative prompted the company to create two fresh concepts named PEV2 and PEV3. Measuring 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) in length, these vehicles accommodate two to three occupants. Designed as compact, shareable electric vehicles (EVs), the PEVs stand out for their innovative layouts.

The PEV3 notably incorporates a central driver's seat flanked by passenger seats, whereas the PEV2 features a central driver's seat paired with a lounge-style passenger seat positioned behind it. Moreover, the report stated limited information is available regarding the concepts, which were intended to be Chevrolet models and were developed by design studios in Michigan and California.

The company highlighted their ability to park parallel to the curb, thus conserving urban parking space. In contrast to typical concepts, functional prototypes were constructed to showcase the efficiency, roominess, and enjoyable driving experience of the vehicles.

Reasons Behind PEV2, PEV3 Development

As per CarBuzz, Wade Bryant, Design Manager at General Motors Advanced Design, revealed that the project was initiated three years ago to explore future transportation solutions and business models for GM. The team examined the commuting challenges in three key cities (New York, London, and Shanghai) to understand the obstacles faced by commuters.

GM Design specifically aimed to pinpoint the unaddressed requirements of businesses and individuals navigating congested urban areas for travel and goods transport. Moreover, the research team discovered that inhabitants of these urban areas typically cover distances of less than 40 miles each day and seldom surpass speeds of 40 mph.

This implies that commuters spend excessive time in traffic, utilizing vehicles that occupy more space and consume more energy than necessary. Consequently, General Motors Advanced Design introduced the PEV2 and PEV3. Despite their names indicating otherwise, these compact vehicles can accommodate two or three passengers while measuring around 98.4 inches in length.

Crafted for shared usage, the passengers are positioned directly behind the driver to optimize the vehicle's narrow and compact design. Both variants boast compact footprints that enable them to park parallel to the curb, thereby conserving essential urban parking space. While the PEV3 appears slightly broader than the PEV2, both models emphasize space efficiency and maneuverability in urban settings.

CarBuzz also stated there are no details regarding the range or performance metrics; however, it is expected that the PEV2 and PEV3 would come equipped with a compact battery offering an estimated range of 60 to 80 miles. This range would be sufficient for a typical day of urban driving.
