The Mercedes-Benz Metris, available in cargo and passenger variants, is facing a recall due to potential fuel pump issues. The problem revolves around suspected fuel pumps provided by South Korean supplier Hyundam Industries, impacting vans produced in South Carolina from CKD kits between April 1, 2022, and February 28, 2023.

Recall Alert: Metris Cargo Van and Passenger Van

Mercedes-Benz began investigating field reports and warranty claims of irregular fuel supply in June 2022, according to the NHTSA. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz AG and the supplier tested the fuel pump impeller raw material throughout 2022 and found a problem.

This situation has prompted a comprehensive recall to address the potential loss of drive power in these Metris vans. Autoevolution delivered details regarding this latest recall from Mercedes-Benz.

Sub-Supplier Responsible for Fuel Pump Issue

According to reports, the material causing concern didn't originate from Hyundam but from an unnamed sub-supplier, ousted in January 2023. Rather than an immediate recall of potentially affected vehicles, Mercedes-Benz AG prolonged investigations into this issue until June 2023. Subsequently, a safety recall was posted on the NHTSA's website after scrutinizing no less than 2,031 field reports and warranty claims.

Around 20,500 units of the Metris and Sprinter were recalled, encompassing vans manufactured between April 21, 2021, and December 23, 2022. Post-recall, Mercedes-Benz AG continued vigilant product monitoring. However, in July 2023, the automaker from Stuttgart became aware of fuel pump failure reports in vehicles produced beyond the initial recall range.

Further examinations and assessments unveiled that the injection molding supplier utilized additional batches of raw material that failed to meet the necessary material standards for crafting fuel pump impellers. After 2,031 claims and reports, Mercedes-Benz AG received 1,901 more, totaling 3,932 for the Metris and Sprinter.

The injection molding supplier's raw material may deform the fuel pump impeller, causing shutdown. Consequently, Mercedes has issued a recall for 13,726 Metris units affected by this issue.

Starting from January 5, dealers will receive instructions to replace the fuel delivery module, encompassing the fuel pump O ring, in the impacted vehicles. Owners identified will receive notifications via first-class mail by February 16.

Mercedes-Benz promises to resolve the issue by March 1.

The brand is recalling 80,000 GLE, GLS, GLC, and G-Class SUVs, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, CLS, and AMG GT cars, and Metris vans from 2021 to 2024 due to fuel pump issues, according to Consumer Reports. Fuel pump failure may cause driving power loss in these cars, prompting this recall.

Mercedes-Benz dealerships will replace malfunctioning gasoline pumps for free.
