Ford brings another classic car back, but this time, it is an all-electric coupe SUV. The new Ford Electric Capri is reborn as an electric vehicle set for its European EV offerings. Notably, the rebirth of Ford Capri comes after four decades.

New Ford Electric Capri, All-Electic SUV Coupe

The new Ford Electric Capri is based on VW's ID platform. It offers RWD and AWD configurations like the ID.5. Its comeback gives an additional four-door electric vehicle option. This is Ford's second take on an electric vehicle for the European market. The new Ford Electric Capri is based on Europe's latest compact Explorer.

According to The Verge, insights from Ford Europe's design director, Amko Leenarts, reveal that the new design concept of the Ford Capri envisions a progressive evolution inspired by the SUV trend since its production hiatus in 1986. This modern interpretation of the Capri continues Ford's trend of revitalizing classic models, such as the transformation of the Mustang into an electric SUV and the rebirth of the Maverick as a pickup truck.

Moreover, the latest addition to the Ford lineup, the Ford Capri, stands as the second vehicle constructed using Volkswagen's MEB electric vehicle platform. This model follows the successful debut of the Explorer EV in Europe, which hit the market last year with no confirmed release plans for the United States.

What Comes With New Ford Electric Capri

As Ford revives this iconic car from the 1970s and 80s, it comes with its latest features, including a wide touchscreen on the dash and a convenient wireless phone charging. As reported by The Sun, despite its modern features, subtle nods to its predecessor are evident in design elements like the distinct headlights, C-shaped passenger windows, and stylish machined perforations adorning the steering wheel.

Additionally, enthusiasts of the new Ford Electric Capri will be delighted to find that the new model will come in the iconic Daytona Yellow color, beloved by fans of the classic vehicle. Anticipated to make its debut in UK showrooms starting this November, the car will offer a rear-wheel-drive option boasting 286 horsepower, all at an estimated price point of around £48,000.

CarScoops also noted some retro vintage details to this Ford Electric Capri. Drawing inspiration from the original Capri's design cues, the new model features a sleek black band across the front, reminiscent of the classic grille. Notably, the lighting elements pay homage to the Mk1 Capri with paired DRLs at each corner, echoing the vintage quad-headlight setup.

Retro touches extend to the subtle fender peaks, oval rear side window, and a tipped-up tail reminiscent of the RS3100's distinctive ducktail spoiler. The rear DRLs also evoke memories of the Mk3 Capri's iconic taillights. While the Capri may be a distant memory for many potential buyers due to its discontinuation almost four decades ago, the modernized design resonates with a fusion of elegance and athleticism.

Internally, the Ford Electric Capri inherits much from the Explorer, including a prominent 14.6-inch portrait infotainment screen and a discreet lockable compartment behind it. A nostalgic flair comes through in the steering wheel's lower spoke, drawing from classic sports steering wheel aesthetics like those found on the Capri RS2600 homologation specials.

Available Variants

Reported by Move Electric, the Ford Electric Capri will offer two variants upon release: the Extended Range RWD model featuring a rear-mounted 282bhp electric motor paired with a 77kWh battery, boasting a remarkable range of up to 390 miles, surpassing the single-motor Explorer by 16 miles.

On the other hand, the Capri Extended Range AWD version is equipped with a dual-motor configuration producing 335bhp and 402 lb-ft of torque, enabling swift acceleration from 0 to 62mph in just 5.3 seconds. This performance aligns it with Volkswagen's GTX models, which utilize a similar powertrain setup.
