Statistics proved that car theft is prevalent in the U.S. The previous year recorded 800,000 cars stolen. The parking lot or garage are the places where one is mostly to have their cars stolen.

Top 5 Most Stolen Cars

The latest list of the most stolen cars in the United States for 2022, compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, includes many familiar vehicles. However, it also highlights recent significant trends. Notably, there have been high-profile cases involving easily pilfered Kia and Hyundai models.

Motor Trend reported that Honda vehicles from the early 2000s that have a reputation for being theft targets. While full-size trucks continue to be the most commonly stolen vehicles, it's important to note that the best-selling truck is not the most stolen one. In summary, it might be advisable to consider installing a kill switch on any of these ten cars, trucks, and crossovers due to their vulnerability to theft.

# 1 Chevrolet Silverado

It has 49,903 reported car thefts in the United States in 2022. The vehicle that experienced the highest number of thefts during that year was the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. This first-generation Silverado lacked some of the advanced security features found in its successors, and it's worth noting that the post-2003 models, especially those with a refreshed design, have garnered a devoted following among enthusiasts.

These numbers surpass car theft involving the Ford F-150 full-size pick-up and Honda Civic.

# 2 Ford F-150

Incidents of car theft of Ford F-150 has 48,175 reported cases. The Ford F-150, which has been very popular in the United States for a long time, is often stolen. Specifically, the 2006 model from the eleventh generation is stolen the most. This is because many people leave their modern key fobs inside the truck, which makes it easier for thieves to steal them.

# 3 Honda Civic

There were 27,113 reported thefts. Older Honda Civics from the '90s and the Y2K era, especially the 2000 model (the most stolen year), are both admired by car enthusiasts and attractive to thieves due to their vulnerability to theft.

Modern Civics, on the other hand, are much less prone to being stolen compared to the classic EG and EK models from the '90s up to the year 2000.

# 4 Honda Accord

Honda Accord still holds its fourth spot on the list of the most stolen cars in the U.S., similar to the previous year. While the total number of thefts has decreased by approximately 10% compared to over 30,000 last year, the most targeted year for theft is still 1997, the final year of this generation.

The old Accord remains a reliable choice for basic transportation, but if you're thinking about getting one as a budget vehicle, it's advisable to consider adding a kill switch or aftermarket immobilizer for added security against theft.

There were 27,089 car thefts recorded for this model.

# 5 Hyundai Sonata

Last on the list of most stolen cars in U.S is Hyundai Sonata. There were 21,707 reported thefts. The 2013 Hyundai Sonata, particularly in lower trim levels lacking an immobilizer, made it into the top ten due to cost-cutting measures. Although the Sonata wasn't a standout among midsize sedans, its styling received praise upon release.
Hyundai and Kia have agreed to a 0 million settlement to address the issue of non-immobilizer-equipped vehicles, offering free security upgrades. However, compensation for total vehicle loss, capped at ,125 per vehicle, may seem insufficient for covering the loss of these relatively new cars.

Facts: Car and Motor Thefts

As shared on GM Authority, NICB President and CEO David Glawe attributes the increase in vehicle thefts to supply chain issues and high demand for used cars, resulting in record-high used car values. Stolen cars are often shipped overseas or stripped for valuable parts in the U.S.
