Hyundai and Kia issue recall affecting 147,000 EVs in US, Damaged Charging Unit

Over 147,000 electric vehicles in the US are being recalled by Hyundai Motor Group, Kia, and Genesis owing to possible problems with damaged Integrated Charging Control Units. Federal safety officials have announced on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website that Kia America is starting a recall for 48,232 vehicles, while Hyundai Motor America is recalling 98,878 vehicles.

The recall is focused on a defective charging component. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) could cease the charging of the 12-volt battery. Potentially resulting in a power loss to the wheels. Multiple electric vehicles are impacted by this issue.
As per Car and Driver, Dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and fuse if needed. They will also perform an ICCU software update at for free. Owners of Hyundai and Genesis may expect notifications by May 14. Meanwhile owners of Kia vehicles will receive letters by April 29.
As reported by Electrek, the electric vehicles were subject to a recall stemming from a software malfunction in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that has the potential to affect the battery's power. This glitch could lead to charging complications and potentially result in a power loss during driving.
Hyundai has mentioned that the enhanced ICCU software is aimed at reducing thermal loading and decreasing peak voltage during operation to address ICCU damage. In the United States, more than 147,000 electric vehicles are currently undergoing recalls by Hyundai Motor Group, Kia, and Genesis due to potential issues related to damaged Integrated Charging Control Units.
In the notifications issued on March 14 and March 15, Kia and Hyundai stated that dealers will "substitute the ICCU and its fuse, as needed." Hyundai announced that 98,878 of their cars will be recalled. This includes electric vehicles sold under Genesis brand.
The recall also affects the Hyundai Ioniq 5 from 2022-2024. Ioniq 6 from 2023 and 2024 are included on the list. Additionally, the electrified Genesis GV60, GV70, and G80 from 2023 and 2024. Kia is recalling 48,232 electric EV6 vehicles from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 model years.

Genesis GV70
